Cluster Lash Map Guide (Lengths 16–10) for DIY Lash Extensions

Why I’m obsessed with lash mapping (especially for clusters)

Cluster lashes are that sweet spot when I want a full lash look without committing to a full extension set. But here’s the thing: clusters can look so different depending on where I place each length. That’s why I always map first. A lash map is basically a simple plan that tells me which lengths go from inner corner to outer corner, so the final look is intentional instead of “I hope this turns out cute.”

If you’ve ever put on clusters and felt like one eye looked lifted and the other looked sleepy… it’s usually not the lash itself. It’s the map. 🫶

Quick decoding: what the numbers actually mean

When I write a map like 9-10-11-12-13-14-13 or 10-12-14-14, those numbers are the lash lengths (usually in mm). I apply them in order from inner corner → outer corner, segment by segment. Each number is one “zone” of my lash line.

Most cluster kits naturally break into little sections, so mapping is easy: I just match each zone to a cluster length. If I’m cutting strips into clusters, I keep the zones consistent (for example: 6–8 zones per eye) so both eyes match.

My placement rules that keep clusters looking clean

I keep these rules in my head every time, because they save me from the “heavy outer corner” disaster:

1) Inner corner stays lighter. Shorter lengths (like 8–10) make the eye look open and soft.

2) The longest point is a choice. If the longest length is at the very end, it reads cat eye. If the longest length is closer to the center, it reads doll/open eye.

3) Symmetry matters more than perfection. I don’t need every cluster placed at the exact same angle, but I do need the same map and the same zone spacing on both eyes.

4) Less glue, more control. With clusters, too much adhesive makes them clump and twist. I aim for secure, not soaked. 💅🏻

Go-to lash cluster maps (the ones I actually reuse)

Below are the maps I rotate depending on my mood and eye shape. These are written inner-to-outer.

1) Natural map (everyday, pretty, not trying too hard)

If I want “my lashes but better,” I use a natural map that slowly builds length without a dramatic peak.

Natural (one layer): 10-10-11-11-11-12-12-12-12

This one is super forgiving. If I’m new to clusters or I’m rushing, this is the map that still looks good even if placement isn’t perfect. It also photographs really clean because the growth looks gradual instead of jumpy.

Another natural option that has a slightly more lifted vibe:

Natural (soft lift): 10-10-12-12-12-14-14

I like this when I want a little extra length without going full glam. It’s still “natural,” just with a bit more presence.

2) Cat eye map (snatched outer corner energy)

Cat eye is the classic. The vibe is elongated, lifted, and a little more “going out.” But with clusters, I’m careful: if the outer corner is too long, it can drag the eye down instead of lifting it.

Cat eye: 9-10-11-12-13-14-13

I love that it drops slightly at the end (that final 13). That tiny step down keeps the very outer corner from looking droopy, especially if my eyes are even slightly downturned.

If I want a bolder, more dramatic cat eye (especially when double stacking):

Cat eye (double stacked vibe): 10-12-12-14-16-14

This one gives that “outer corner pop,” but I keep the placement neat and avoid pushing the 16 too far outward. I place the longest length just before the very end, then taper.

3) Open eye map (bright, round, awake)

Open eye (sometimes called “open” or “round”) is my favorite when I want my eyes to look bigger and more centered. The longest lengths sit closer to the middle instead of the edge.

Open eye: 8-9-10-11-12-13-14

This is a clean build that works well when I’m using lighter clusters. If I want it to look more “doll-like,” I’ll keep the middle the longest and then taper down on the outer corner (even if the written map is a simple climb, my last zone is where I start softening).

4) Baby doll map (cute, lifted, center-focused)

Baby doll is that sweet, wide-eyed look. It’s not as elongated as cat eye, and it’s not as subtle as natural.

Baby doll: 10-11-12-12-12-12-11

This map is a lifesaver when I don’t want the outer corner to dominate. The little drop at the end keeps everything looking perky. If my eyes are close-set, I also like baby doll because it doesn’t pull everything outward too aggressively.

5) Hybrid map (soft glam without looking too “done”)

Hybrid is my “best of both worlds.” It’s textured, a bit fuller, but still wearable. I use it when I want a lash look that stands out in photos but doesn’t feel costume-y in real life.

Hybrid: 11-13-15-15-13-11

Because it peaks and then comes back down, it creates dimension. This is also a great map if I’m mixing cluster densities (some fluffier, some spikier) because the shape already has movement built in.

Another hybrid option that’s super easy to follow:

Hybrid (one layer): 10-12-12-14-14-14

This one is simple, balanced, and gives a noticeable lift without a harsh wing.

6) Wispy map (texture + spikes, the “it girl” set)

Wispy is all about intentional unevenness. I’m basically creating a lash line that has little peaks (spikes) and softer filler in between. If I’m doing wispy with clusters, I plan it like two passes: a base layer and then spikes.

Wispy base (1st pass): 12-12-13-13-14

Wispy spikes (2nd pass): 14-15-16-16-16

I place the base first so the lash line looks full. Then I add spikes on top (or slightly above the base placement) so the texture reads wispy instead of messy. The key is spacing: I don’t spike every zone. I pick a few points so it looks airy.

If I want a much more dramatic spiky look:

Wispy (spikes, double stacked feel): 18-18-17-16-16-15

Filler lengths: 16-16-15-14-14-13-13

This is not my everyday set, but when I want that bold, fluttery texture, it eats. I just make sure my inner corner doesn’t start too long, or the whole look can feel heavy.

7) Dramatic map (full glam, high impact)

Dramatic maps are for when I want the lashes to be the main character. I usually do this when I’m double stacking or using denser clusters.

Dramatic (double stacked): 13-14-15-15-16-16-17-18-18-18

This is long and bold, so placement matters. I keep the clusters aligned and avoid twisting them, because dramatic sets show every little mistake. If I’m not careful, the lash line can look bulky instead of fluffy.

Mini maps for quick sets (when I only have a few lengths)

Sometimes I only have 3–4 lengths available, and I still want a cute shape. These quick maps are my “no excuses” options.

Simple lift: 10-12-14-14

This one is fast and flattering. I use it when I want a subtle cat/open hybrid. If the outer corner starts to look too long, I’ll angle the last cluster slightly upward rather than extending it outward.

Soft cat mini: 8-9-10 / 8-9-10-10-10-10-10-9

This keeps the middle full while tapering the edge. It’s a nice option when I’m trying to avoid a droopy outer corner.

How I choose a map based on eye shape (no overthinking, just practical)

If my eyes are downturned: I avoid making the very last zone the longest. I like maps that peak before the end, like 9-10-11-12-13-14-13 or baby doll styles that taper.

If my eyes are close-set: I keep the inner corner shorter and clean (8–10 range) and avoid super dense inner clusters. Open eye and baby doll maps can help the eyes look more balanced.

If my eyes are wide-set: I can handle a bit more length toward the inner-to-mid area without it looking crowded. Natural builds and hybrid peaks look really pretty here.

If my eyes are upturned: Cat eye looks extra flattering, but I still like a tiny taper at the end so it stays lifted and not overly sharp.

Application tips that make the map actually work

Zone your lash line first. I mentally split my lash line into equal sections before I even pick up a cluster. If I’m doing 7 numbers, I make 7 zones. This keeps the map from drifting.

Start with the anchor points. I place the key lengths first: inner corner, the longest point, and the outer taper. Then I fill in the rest. This stops me from accidentally running out of space and cramming clusters at the end.

Angle is part of the map. A 14mm placed straight out can look heavier than a 16mm angled slightly upward. When I want lift, I focus on direction, not just length.

Double stacking without chaos. If I’m stacking, I keep the bottom layer slightly lighter/shorter and the top layer as the “shape maker” (like spikes). That’s how I get fullness without a thick, blocky lash line.
